Kick-Ass...A Bloody Delight

For all you proud geeks out there, this is the Golden Age for Comic Book movies. Starting out in 1999 with Blade, and really sparking the following year with X men. Comic Book movies have been steadily growing in quality and appeal, to the point that it's no longer just the big names companies are after, like Superman, or Spiderman. Indie films of the genre have also been on the rise, names that only the most devoted of fans on the market know. Well this year we'll get a few tasty morsels out of that department, starting with Kick-Ass

Matthew Vaughn, british director and genius behind Layer Cake and Star Dust, brings us what people are already calling, the most bloody, over the top R rated superhero movie of all times...and they all love it. Kick Ass, who was written by comic book legend Mark Millar (The Ultimates, Wanted), was independently made by the filmmaker, so as to stay away from the influence of any studio head. Even so, he managed to reel in big names like Nicholas Cage and Mark Strong, plus a incredible cast of young stars who will leave their mark here no doubt.
Aaron Jonhson landed the main role of Dave Lizewski, beating over a hundred other actors who auditioned, and in fact he was second to last to try out. His character is your average teenage boy, unremarkable, inconsequential and bored. A comic book geek that decides you don't need powers to go out and there an help people. So he dons a costime and hits the streets, inspiring a wave of superheros as he goes. Like Red Mist, who becomes Kick Ass's partner and is played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse. The young actor seems eager to step away from his Mclovin shoes and into something new, and if the trailers are anything to go by, he seems to have succeed.
However, these two are nothing compared to the dynamic (and scary) duo of Big Daddy and his daughter Hit Girl. Played by Nicholas Cage and Chloe Moretz respectively. Cage plays an ex cop who's wife was killed by the mob, and so he becomes a superhero in a very Michael Keaton looking batman suit (although he sounds more like Adam West in it). He's brutal and tough all right, but it's the twelve year old with the knife collection that steals the show. There was much controversy of this film, and most of it came from Chloe Moretz's character. She swears like a sailor and hacks limb like a surgeon during the film, and indeed, the actress was barely 12 when she filmed the movie. She has reassured the public that she did it only as role with permission from her parents. "If I ever uttered one word that I said in Kick-Ass, I would be grounded for years! I'd be stuck in my room until I was 20! I would never in a million years say that. I'm an average, everyday girl." However people take it, there's no doubt of two things. One, that its the beginning of a promising career, and two, she will be remembered for this one.
Now lets not forget out bad guy, Mark Strong, a frequent collaborator of Vaunghn's close friend and mentor Guy Ritchie, stepped in as Frank D'Amico, father of Mintz's character (Red Mist) and a ruthless crime syndicate leader (or mob boss for short). Strong is no stranger to playing villains, having just been in Sherlock Holmes with Ritchie, and looking forward to Green Lantern with Martin Campbell. Here however, he gets absolute freedom to his cruelty, and goes as mean as he can get.
The film hasn't been released yet, but already it has garned inmmense early positive reaction. It was shown at 11th Butt-Numb-A-Thon film festival on December 13, 2009, where it was received with wild enthusiasm by the event's attendees. Plus, currently hold a very rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Also, the movie's song, also titled Kick-Ass and played by Mika, has also received a lot of attention and praise. So be sure to be first in line at your local theater this April 16, for what promises to be the most original superhero movie to date. Check the link bellow for the Red Band Trailer.
